Please check the Calendar (at the top of the menu on the left) for current course dates as this will be the most current and easy to find the latest course information ! There are no dates set for some of these, but they can run with as few as 4 people. Please contact us about your needs. Some suggestions are:
Intermediate: This course is designed to build on basic snowcraft skills, and will include teaching the use of ropes and more advanced navigation skills, including on an actual trip. The course is planned for the Mount Cook area, conditions permitting. See link below for full details. Develop route selection and snow safety skills for alpine/back country environments. A good course for all beginner and intermediate climbers and backcountry tourers alike. Learn to identify avalanche terrain and select safe routes, understand the general principles of avalanche information, identify relevant weather conditions and improve personal safety and awareness.
Course aims/content: To teach and practice basic skills to enable safe ski-mountaineering and touring in glaciated terrain and enjoy some adventurous skiing in the Southern Alps. We would aim to cover as many as possible of the following subjects: terrain evaluation, snow stability evaluation, crevasse extraction and basic rope skills for skiers, hot tips for all-mountain skiing with a pack, practice avalanche search techniques (transceivers etc.), emergency shelters for skiers. The CMC has introduced a course for children keen to develop their skills and knowledge or learn rockclimbing skills so they can take to the indoor walls or to the crags. A course is held each school holiday break (April/July/September) for two consecutive mornings (approx. 9 am - 1 pm). Experienced instructors spend time showing rockclimbing techniques, gear use and safety factors. Courses are held either indoor or outdoor, depending on weather and experience of participants. Own harness and rock shoes preferable, and other equipment provided. Ratio is 2:1 depending on group numbers.
