
18/19 September 2010 YMCA Christchurch
The South Island Secondary School Competition 2010 took place at the Christchurch YMCA, over two consecutive days. Over 100 climbers from around the South Island came in school teams of four, and, with time contributing to the competition, every individual climbed 24 routes on day one, and 16 more routes for the following day.
One of our oldest and most disinguished members has recently passed on - Brian Mason. He joined the CMC in 1934, remaining a member for a staggering 75 years.
The CMC passes our sympathy to his family and friends.

Donations Reflect Depth of Feeling for Club Huts
The CMC is very pleased to have acquired the Memorial Cross awarded to the Barker Family by the NZ Government following the death of Neville Barker in the second world war.

He was killed by a mine near Monte Cassino during the taking of this famous monastery

When I asked Nick Moyle about plans for the Kennedy 2008 my first question was “Will there be beers?†to which Nick replied, “Yes.†From that point my attendance was pretty much guaranteed.
Imagine my surprise and pleasure when I also learned that iconic NZ climber Lydia Bradey was to be the speaker.

The CMC is saddened by the loss of another member of great stature in the climbing community - Gottlieb Braun-Elwert, by an untimely heart attack.
We pass our sincere condolences to his family and associates.
Gottlieb has been a member of the CMC for over 25 years, and known to all for his outstanding achievements and contribution to mountaineering.
His funeral is Wed. 20th 1:30pm in Tekapo at the Community Hall.
Jack has been a very big part of the CMC for a very long time. He has been one of our most respected climbers, and contributed a great deal to the club and climbing.
He is also a well read author - his books tell of his adventure and commitment to the outdoors throughout his life, and of the fun and pleasure he brought to those around him.
He was our club Patron for the past year until the recent AGM.
He Joined the club in 1941, and was awarded Life Member status in 1985.
His funeral is Saturday 21st, 11am at Jack Ryan's Place in London St.
